Fan Art Friday: Firefly and Serenity

We’re all in Atlanta for Dragon*Con this weekend, and we’ll be seeing and hopefully chatting with some of the cast of Joss Whedon’s space western that won’t die, Firefly. I thought it was only appropriate, then, that I feature Firefly and Serenity for this week’s Fan Art Friday. Check out the cool art from around the internet, and be sure to follow the links back to the original artists!

Book Review: Neverwhere

Neverewhere by Neil Gaiman

Neil Gaiman’s Neverwhere, the novelization of the 1996 BBC Two show by the same name, follows exactly the plot of the TV show, but allows Gaiman to expand on certain elements and correct changes made by the series, which he also wrote. While I have never seen the television series, or for that matter read the graphic novel which followed the novel, my very first thought upon finishing the book was, “This would better translate visually.” That thought came to me before I even knew that it had already and would subsequently be portrayed in visual medias. However, this is a thought I usually have with Neil Gaiman. I love his books, but I tend to like his work better when its not done in written form.

Castle Crashers Raids Your 360 Today

The XBox 360’s Summer of Arcade comes to a close this week with the release of the long-awaiting hack and slash game, Castle Crashers. Developed by The Behemoth, the same company that made the cult hit game Alien Hominid, Castle Crashers has a similarly cartoonish style that follows your knight characters as they ransack castles in the name of glory and loot. Castle Crashers clocks in at 1200 Microsoft Points, or $15, and is now available for download on the XBox Live Arcade.

Get Rid of Your Pesky Heroes With Ten Cans of Anti-Heroes

It is a common belief that to be a hero you must essentially be selfless, virtuous, and committed to doing good. Well, not every protagonist has that belief structure. In the case of the following ten people, we see black and white blend into shades of grey. These are people who march to the beat of their own drums and who are driven by their own motivations, whether they be revenge, financial gain, personal enlightenment, or just to live life by their own terms. These ten prove that just because you’re the main character, it doesn’t mean you have to be the squeaky clean good guys.

Rush Comes To Rock Band Today

The next full downloadable album is available for Rock Band on the XBox 360 today and will be downloadable on the Playstation 3 on Thursday. It’s Moving Pictures by Rush and will set you back 880 Microsoft Points (or $11) for the full download. If you just want a few individual songs, here’s the track list, with each song available for 160 MS Points (or about $2):

  • Tom Sawyer (Original)
  • Red Barchetta
  • YYZ
  • Limelight (Original)
  • The Camera Eye
  • With Hunt
  • Vital Signs

After checking out the tracks on YouTube, I know I’ll definitely be picking up “YYZ.” Rock instrumentals are few and far between in this game, and this is one of the greats.

Edit: Due to “technical difficulties” the Rush album has been delayed to a later date. Boo!

Comic Book Contest: Round 4!

Congratulations to the winner of last week’s comic book contest, David Seruyange! He has twenty comics on the way to him, and that opens the way for a new contest this week. Here’s how it works:

Reply to this post and tell me which is better and why: Marvel or DC. You’ll be entered in a drawing to win a random stack of 20 of these comics. Be sure to use your real e-mail address when you reply, or I won’t be able to contact you if you win.

Keep in mind that these are not minty-mint collector grade comics. They’re the actual copies we read here when we write up reviews, so they ain’t perfect. They’re great for reading, though, so why not give it a shot and get these things off my hands?

The contest will run extra long, due to our being at Dragon*Con this coming weekend. The contest will end next Wednesday, September 3, at 12:00am Eastern time. At that time I’ll draw a winner, and then I’ll start up another one of these later in the day. You can expect comic giveaways like this each week until I get rid of this mountain of issues.

Fandomania.com Author Interviews at Dragon*Con!

As many of you may know, I’ve recently been added to the writing staff at Fandomania.com, where I have been contributing book reviews and have been announcing new upcoming book releases.  Well, at Dragon*Con I will be conducting interviews with several authors who include:

Kevin J. Anderson
Robert Buettner
Tracy Akers
Lynn Abbey
Elizabeth Donald
Keith R.A. DeCandido
Rachel Caine
Christina Barber
Tobias Buckell

Some of these authors you may have heard of before, and maybe some you haven’t, but that’s exactly why I am going to be interviewing them.  If there is anyone here you would like to ask a question of, get those questions to me before Dragon*Con and, if I can, I will be happy to slip them into my interviews.  (No, I will not ask insulting questions, sorry)  I am really excited about the opportunity to meet these people and do something more at Fandomania.

Speaking of which, after Dragon*Con, I expect to have an article series called Defining the Genre that’s going to be worth checking out.  Also, if you didn’t know already, I have recently started a MySpace account where I would really like to get in contact not only with authors but other readers as well.  I love book discussions, and anything book related, but maybe not Fandomania related, will be there!  Check it out and add me as a friend!
