Book Review: The Coma

The Coma by Alex Garland

Have you ever woken up from a dream that seemed so real you had to check your surroundings to make sure you have really woken up? Now imagine that a series of troubling events has occurred and now you’re at your best friend’s house with no recollection of how you have gotten there. Are you losing your mind or have you really woken up at all? This is the question that Carl faces after being beaten into a coma on the London Underground, is he really awake but losing his mind, or is he in fact stuck in his mind?

Contest: Win Comics From Fandomania

We get a bunch of review copies of comic books every week, and after going through the noteworthy ones and writing up the reviews, the comics just sit in a stack here in Fandomania Central. While moving furniture and wishing I were at Comic Con this past weekend, I decided the big stack o comics needs to go. So here’s the deal…

Reply to this post with your favorite thing you heard about, saw, or learned from this year’s San Diego Comic Con, and you’ll be entered in a drawing to win a stack of 20 of these comics. Be sure to use your real e-mail address when you reply, or I won’t be able to contact you if you win.

Keep in mind that these are not minty-mint collector grade comics. They’re the actual copies we read here when we write up reviews, so they ain’t perfect. They’re great for reading, though, so why not give it a shot and get these things off my hands?

The contest will run until next Wednesday (August 6) at 12:00am Eastern time. At that time I’ll announce the winner, and then I’ll start up another one of these later in the day. You can expect comic giveaways like this each week until I get rid of this mountain of issues.

Good luck!

Chuck Dixon and Mike S. Miller To Adapt Wheel Of Time

The previously announced Wheel of Time comic book adaptation, in production at Dabel Brothers and based on the bestselling epic fantasy novels by the late Robert Jordan, now has a creative team. Chuck Dixon will be writing the series with Mike S. Miller on art duties. Dixon is a longtime comics favorite, having helmed many Batman series throughout the 1990’s and creating the Birds of Prey team and comic book at DC. Miller is no stranger to adapting fantasy novels to comics, as he was the artist on George R. R. Martin’s Hedge Knight series, a spinoff story from the Song of Ice and Fire fantasy novel series.

It was a huge week for Marvel’s Secret Invasion storyline with no less than six tie-in comics released at the same time! With all those issues, the story had to have some huge developments, right? Well, not really. Here’s a look at what happened, how and to whom this past week in Secret Invasion.

Book Review: Cat’s Cradle

Cat’s Cradle by Kurt Vonnegut Jr.

This summer I had solicited book recommedations from my friends, and was pleasantly surprised to have Cat’s Cradle recommended to me. I had previously only read Slaugherhouse Five by Vonnegut, and while I really liked it, I questioned whether or not I would really like to read other books in his oddly structured style. Well after reading Cat’s Cradle I can only say that those worries were unfounded. (Note to those who are intimidated by seeing a new chapter every other page or so: just ignore the chapter names and keep reading.) Other than what I just mentioned, I had no clue what I was getting into, and the name didn’t give me any hints.

Ten Remakes That Don’t Suck

With the number of movies hitting theaters now, it’s hard to find true originality. There have been a slew of sequels and remakes that fail to live up to the original films that inspired them, but every once in a while there’ll be a remake that equals or surpasses the original. John’s back this week with a look at ten movies that fit just such a category.
