GI Joe Comics Join Transformers At IDW

For the past few years, GI Joe comics have seen a resurgence in popularity due to the recent series and mini-series published by Devil’s Due. With the current run of GI Joe: America’s Elite wrapping, the Real American Hero is jumping ship and swimming over to its new publisher, IDW. IDW already has the Transformers comics license and has seen huge success there, so they’re no strangers to the retro-cool genre. Current plans for GI Joe include:

  • A monthly GI Joe Vs Cobra series beginning in October 2008
  • Comic and graphic novel adaptations of the GI Joe movie, coming in late summer 2009
  • Reprints of classic GI Joe comics, most likely from its run with Marvel

Shirley Manson Joins Terminator: TSCC Cast

When Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles returns for its second season, it will have gained a new high profile cast member. Garbage lead singer Shirley Manson has signed on to play Catherine Weaver, “the CEO of a cutting-edge high-tech company.” With the Connors gunning for SkyNet, one has to wonder whether Weaver’s character might be instrumental in the eventual building of the Terminator program.

Roogoo Coming To XBLA Next Week

The June 4 game release on the XBox Live Arcade will be Roogoo, a 3D puzzler produced by SpiderMonk Entertainment. Featuring characters and graphics that look like the love child of Mighty Muggs and Katamari Damacy, here’s the official blurb from the developer:

Roogoo tasks players with guiding meteors in the form of shaped blocks through a series of rotating disks as a means of saving planet Roo and the entire Roogoo race. If aligned correctly, the disks allow the blocks to reach the ground and scores are awarded. Various obstacles and enemies will impede the blocks’ movement and with the flow of meteor blocks steadily increasing as the game progresses, players will have to think on their feet to save the Roogoo and rack up seriously high scores.

Roogoo will ship with more than 45 levels and includes single player as well as split-screen multiplayer and party play. The game will be on the Arcade next Wednesday for 800 MS Points ($10).

Comic Thieves Swipe $10,000 In Merchandise

Some attendees of Michigan’s Motor City Comic Con earlier this month more than made up for the price of admission. According to Graham Crackers Comics owner Jamie Graham, felonious fanboys made off with a stack of rare CCG graded comic books from the Graham Crackers booth on May 18. The stolen merchandise included:

  • All Star Comics #6 CGC 5.0
  • Batman #60 CGC 3.5
  • Batman #70 CGC 5.0
  • Detective #79 CGC 5.0
  • Looney Tunes #1 CGC 3.0
  • Marvel Mystery Comics #35 CGC 8.0
  • Marvel Mystery Comics #71
  • Shield-Wizard Comics #6 CGC 9.0
  • Superboy #1 CGC 8.0

The overall value of the loot clocks in at no less than ten thousand dollars. The highest valued pieces stolen were the Looney Tunes and Superboy issues. Graham Crackers was not the only victim, as Worldwide Comics also lost Silver Surfer #2 CGC 9.4 and Spidey Super Stories #1 CGC 9.6.

With the victims surely keeping an eye on eBay for the lost comics, you have to wonder what the thieves plan to do with the stolen comics.

Munchkin Board Game Announced

Wannabe dungeon raiders, listen up! Steve Jackson Games has announced that their popular Munchkin card game is making the leap into the board gaming realm. The board game incarnation, Munchkin Quest, was originally intended for release at this year’s Origins gaming convention, but the ship date has been pushed back while the designers tinker with last minute adjustments to the play. When the game finally does hit shelves, it’ll be available for $49.95. Here’s the official blurb from the publisher:

Kill the monster, grab the treasure, stab your buddy. That’s what it’s all about. Now, Munchkin comes to the boardgame.

Cooperate with the whole group, adventure with a partner, or strike out on your own. You don’t know what’s behind a door until you open it . . . then another tile is added to the dungeon. Battle monsters for power and treasure, or send them after your friends. Reach Level 10, and then get out alive if you can!

Designed by Steve Jackson, and illustrated by John Kovalic, this boardgame doesn’t take itself seriously. Except for the loot - munchkins are always serious about that!

Coming soon to game rooms everywhere . . .

Munchkin Quest, like its card game predecessor, will be an expandable game, and the first expansion pack is planned to release before the end of the year.

Lost’s Mysteries Revealed In 1950’s Comic Book?

In a recent episode of Lost, the ageless Richard Alpert presented a young John Locke with a copy of Mystery Tales #40, a real comic book from the 1950’s, the era of Locke’s flashback episode. As with most things on Lost, what might have been a throwaway prop could also be the key to a number of the show’s mysteries.

A group of Lost fans has banded together to purchase an authentic copy of the rare comic via eBay. They ponied up $417 and now are posting the entire issue page by page on their blog, along with interesting analysis of the comic’s story as it might (or might not) relate to what’s been going on with Lost.

Among the hints they have picked up from the issue so far are references to the black smoke, ancient civilizations (perhaps like the one that constructed the four-toed statue?), and shadowy “others.” A lot of what they’re tying into Lost is very open to interpretation, but I tend to think that at this point the producers wouldn’t include a specific comic book without having an agenda behind it.

Take a look at their blog, and see what you think: Link

Watchmen’s Minutemen Revealed

Ain’t It Cool News had a Memorial Day scoop this week with the first look at the Minutemen from the upcoming Watchmen film. The Minutemen are the 1940’s precursor to the current heroes featured in the film. The photo gets me excited about the film again, as my hype had waned a bit after seeing that most of the current-day Watchmen costumes had been Schumachered. These retro heroes are looking great, though, and the photo is very evocative of the Justice Society of America.

Watchmen Spinoff Movie On The Way

In the Watchmen comics series by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons, there’s a character who spends the entire story sitting outside a newsstand reading a comic book. The comic is a dark pirate tale about a shipwreck, and it serves as a side story to the main action of Watchmen. Time Warner has announced that the comic book story will be produced as an animated film alongside the production of Watchmen. Tentatively titles Tales of the Black Freighter, the side story is slated to be released as a straight to DVD feature in March, five days after the theatrical release of Watchmen. Like Watchmen, Black Freighter will be directed by 300 director Zack Snyder. As an added bonus, the DVD also will include a documentary style feature called Under the Hood, undoubtedly inspired by the autobiographical stories told by one of the superheroes at the end of each Watchmen issue.
