Playstation Home Delayed To Fall 2008

Home, the Playstation 3 Second Life-like game / community system, has been pushed back to a fall 2008 release. Here’s the official word from Sony:

“Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCEI) announced today that it will expand the Closed Beta testing for PLAYSTATION®Home in Summer 2008, inviting a further number of registrants from the PLAYSTATION®3 (PS3®) users. Following completion of the Expanded Closed Beta test, the PLAYSTATION Home Open Beta service will commence in Fall 2008.

“We understand that we are asking PS3 and prospective PS3 users to wait a bit longer, but we have come to the conclusion that we need more time to refine the service to ensure a more focused gaming entertainment experience than what it is today,” said Kazuo Hirai, President and Group CEO, Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. “Our overarching objective is to provide users with new gaming experiences that are available only on PLAYSTATION Home. Spending more time on the development and on the Closed Beta testing reaffirms our commitment to bringing a quality service, maintaining the PlayStation® tradition.”

The PLAYSTATION Home Open Beta service that will become available in Fall 2008 will be built around providing new and fun community gaming experiences.”

I’m planning to finally pick up my own Playstation 3 when the Metal Gear Solid 4 bundle hits this summer, and I’ve been looking forward to building my own home and collecting trophies in Home (and yes, I’m an achievement junkie on the XBox 360). I guess we’ll just have a bit longer wait now.

Justice League Movie Dead On Arrival

The Justice League movie that’s been in pre-production seemingly since the dawn of time finally seems to have derailed. Robert Sanchez at IESB has been digging into the rumor of the film’s being canceled and got this statement from an executive working on the same lot in Australia where Justice League was to be filmed: “Yes, it’s dead.”

Rumors had attached Adam Brody as The Flash, Common as Green Lantern, DJ Cotrona as Superman, and Megan Gale as Wonder Woman, but if this report is true (as it seems to be), the entire film has been tabled.

Going Digital: 4 Ways To Turn Your Fandom Eco-Friendly

Today is Earth Day, and it’s a good time to think about how we all can decrease our negative impact on our planet. Being a fan of comics, sci-fi, fantasy, movies, or whatever you might be into inevitably leads to your accumulating a whole lot of “stuff.” That stuff can pile up over time, and a lot of it really goes to waste, as it can consist of books, DVDs, comics, and other media that you will enjoy once and then forget. All that wasteful media can be avoided, though, if you shift your fandom into digital alternatives. Going digital reduces your ecological footprint, and as a surprising byproduct it can make your hobbies a lot more convenient and fun to pursue.

Here are four technogeek-friendly ways to make the move from having mounds of dead trees and plastic laying around to having just a few cool gadgets.

Lost Cities Coming to XBLA This Week

Major Nelson has announced that this week’s addition to the XBox Live Arcade will be Lost Cities, an adaptation of a popular Eurogame that’s being brought to the XBox 360 by Sierra Online. It will be selling for 800 MS Points ($10), and I think this will be a must-buy for me, given my love for odd card and board games. I linked to this video once before, when the game’s development was initially announced, but it warrants another link now that the game’s being released. Lost Cities hits on Wednesday, but you can get a jump on things by learning how to play now from board game aficionado Scott Nicholson at Board Games With Scott: Link.

Contests and Giveaways: Grand Theft Auto IV

After all the hype and hoopla, it’s almost here, and this is your chance to grab a free copy! I’ll be giving away one copy of Grand Theft Auto IV to the winner of this contest, and you’ll get your choice of the XBox 360 version or the Playstation 3 version. Here’s how to enter:

Post a comment on this message telling me one thing you can do to help promote Fandomania. The site’s still young, and more traffic means more contests and prizes, so give it some good thought, and give the site a hand! Alternately, you can post a comment telling me what sorts of posts you’d enjoy reading here. I’m all about writing about what you want to read, and sometimes it’s hard to pick topics! You’ll have until Friday, April 25, to post your comment here. Then I’ll do a random drawing from the commenters to pick a winner. The game officially releases on Tuesday, April 29, and the winner’s copy will ship out that day.

Good luck!
